Viterbi Pathways Program

Hey guys please help me.

I recently was rejected from USC, but I got this really weird message at the end:

*name*, the Viterbi School of Engineering and the Office of Admission have identified you as someone we hope will consider transferring to USC in the future. We hope you will join the Viterbi Pathways Program, a unique opportunity to meet with a Viterbi Admission Counselor and receive individualized, transfer counseling. The Viterbi School wants to help guide you, step-by-step, on the best way to be a competitive transfer applicant. I hope you are interested in this opportunity and want to be considered for future transfer admission to the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. The Viterbi School will be in touch with you in the days ahead to provide more information, including how to set up your first transfer advisement appointment. They will work closely with you to plan out a transfer guide for the next year.

I did some digging, but couldn't find anything about it on the Internet. I thought it was the Trojan Transfer Plan, but I really don't know. There isn't any information, and even when I called USC Admissions, the person I spoke with didn't fully know what it was. She said to talk to Viterbi, but I couldn't reach them.

Any ideas? Thanks!

how to negotiate merit based financial aid at USC?

My son got into USC with national merit scholarship - but even with that, it will still cost $50K per year. with 2 more kids who are freshman in high school, it is still quite high - and we don't qualify for need-based scholarship.

Any tips on how to negotiate for more merit scholarship at USC?
can we negotiate with them vs other schools? My son got regents at UC Davis with $7500/year - same degree... so that will be approx $28K per year.

thoughts? tips?

USC vs WUSTL

I'm a current Senior who was accepted into the Biomedical Engineering prog at Washu, and into the Biophysics prog, with Premed track at USC (my first choice was Biomed, but I am already considering a switch to neuroscience). I live in western New York, and due to the current public health crisis all college campuses are closed and my first experience at each of these schools would be in the fall when moving in. Financially, Washu is cheaper but USC is not entirely out of my price range. I'm planning on applying to med school after completing my undergraduate degree, so if anyone had experience applying out of either of these schools that would be appreciated. I was hoping some current students or Alumni would be able to tell me more about each school and help make my decision easier as I would be moving across the country to go to either of these schools.

UCLA v. USC

Hi all. While we are waiting for decisions to be released, I was wondering if any current students, parents of students, or alumni can provide insight into the differences between USC and UCLA.

I am completely unbiased. I have no legacy or affiliation with either university.

I understand the two have a really intense rivalry, but unlike most rivalries, there is no clear winner to this one. For example, in the University of Michigan v. Michigan State rivalry, U of M is pretty much better in every way I can think of. In University of Virginia v. Virginia Tech., UVA is a much better, more renowned school. In the case of UCLA and USC, I can’t say one is obviously better than the other.

As an outsider to both schools, I’d say what myself and most people think is that UCLA is the slightly better, more renowned university, and USC is the more fun and spirited institution. UCLA is in a very affluent area while USC is on a bad side of LA. And while I’ve only toured UCLA, it looks to me as though USC is a nicer campus (as it is private and they have more money).

Anyways, any insight helps!

USC Recent Happenings & News

It may be good to have a dumping ground for things going on at USC that may not warrant their own thread, but are good to put out there. So when current parents like myself (and many others on here) get an email from the administration, or anyone sees an article about something USC, there is a place to discuss some of this random/unexpected information. For example, the recent changes to financial aid, or other policy updates that can be important but short lived, and often get buried in the class of 20xx Applicant thread. Or just random rumors/thoughts/views/comments that don't fit elsewhere. Not sure if it will be that active, but it could be for things that could affect both current students and/or applicants.

Or maybe I didn't want to feed the fire (like online news is doing) and title this thread about the virus, ha. So, to start it off, I thought I would mention that in relation to the Covid-19/CoronaVirus situation, USC is experimenting (beta-testing I suppose), by having classes go to an online format Wed-Friday of this week. This is the week before spring break which will allow some students to get a jump on travel (home or elsewhere) a few days early, if they so choose and schedule allows. I am fascinated with the process to get this kind of thing in place at such a large school (I understand UW going to all online classes starting Monday.)

I also understand that some students in study abroad were asked to return. Again not sure if all, or just hot spots like Italy. Maybe others have more info to share.

Here's the info on changes to this week:

3/6: Campus-wide Test: Classes Temporarily Move Online Effective March 11-13
MEMORANDUM

To: USC Community

From: Charles F. Zukoski, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs

Date: March 6, 2020

Subject: Campus-wide Test: Classes Temporarily Move Online Effective March 11-13

As the COVID-19 (coronavirus) situation evolves, your safety and wellbeing are our main priority. As a result, we continue to take precautionary measures to ensure that we are prepared for any potential disruptions to teaching and learning at USC.

There are no cases at USC of COVID-19. As you may be aware, California and Los Angeles County have declared states of emergency, though we are mindful that there is no immediate threat to the general public.

Our university must be nimble and flexible in the event that we need to make any further changes to the semester. We have about 7,000 lecture classes this spring. We need to test our technical capabilities to ensure academic continuity in an online environment should there be a disruption.

With this in mind, we will test our online lectures and seminars starting Wednesday, March 11 through Friday, March 13. The online modality will replace in-person classes for those three days. Please work with your instructors if special technical accommodations may be needed.

I emphasize that this is a test of our capabilities. The university is fully functional. Student residential colleges, dining halls, offices, libraries, health centers, and recreation and athletics facilities are open. Campus events are scheduled to take place as planned. Employees are expected to be at work.

Should students’ academic schedules only include lectures and seminars, students need not remain on campus as these will be held online.

All faculty are being required to switch to a Blackboard or Zoom platform (or another school-specific online learning system) so classes and office hours can continue online. Please review the March 2 memo for important guidance on how to do this, along with this resource from the Center for Excellence in Teaching. It is also important to record your classes on Zoom.

During Spring Recess, we will review feedback from faculty, students, and staff to determine how to improve the online experience. Should the situation erode and we need to take stronger measures, we will be able to smoothly and quickly adapt, having tested our resources for three days.

I am proud of how supportive our community has been. We will continue to follow the guidance of our health experts and we will take every step possible to ensure the wellbeing of our students, faculty, and staff.

Please continue to check your email including during Spring Recess for updates.

Class Schedule

Monday, March 9 through Tuesday, March 10 – Normal classroom activities
Wednesday, March 11 through Friday, March 13 – Online testing; lecture and seminar classes will be held online
Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 20 – Spring Recess
Monday, March 23 – Classes scheduled to resume in person
Resources: USC’s official page on COVID-19 has all the latest messages and status updates. Check it frequently. For questions, please use the COVID-19 hotline: 213-740-6291 or email: studenthealth@usc.edu.

Hygiene practices: Please remember to take care of yourself, and use common sense hygiene practices. Please stay home if you are sick, wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, cover your cough with your elbow or sleeve, and avoid touching your nose and mouth.

Travel recommendations: We strongly advise against international travel for students and employees over spring recess. USC Chief Health Officer Sarah Van Orman provided details in her March 4 memo.

USC vs Community College: Worth It for CS?

I was recently admitted to USC, but was wondering whether it would be better to consider a community college (eg DeAnza or Ohlone) for 2 years and transferring to UC Davis instead of doing USC for Dornsife Physics/CS or Viterbi CS for 4 years. I did not fill out the FAFSA because I thought my parents' income of 150k/yr would disqualify me from any FA. However, I ended up with $0 FA this way, and I doubt my parents would want to pay $78k a year. I have thought of CC as well but feel worried about losing out on college life/networking opportunities. If I choose USC, I will likely have to take out a loan or reduce my parent's income rather significantly. Thoughts on the benefits and disadvantages on each path and your opinions?

USC WBB 2024 admitted students

I'm an international student who just got into the World Bachelor in Business program at USC Marshall School of Business! I know the program size is quite small, and I couldn't find many people who got accepted, so I decided to create this thread to get connect with WBB admitted students.

I'm not 100% committed yet, but WBB is definitely one of my top choices. I'm mainly deciding between USC WBB, CMU Tepper, Emory, Babson, and LSE (U.K.), if anyone wants to share their ideas toward these options.

I'm looking forward to meeting y'all!

USC Physics/CS Major vs CS Viterbi

I was recently admitted to USC to Dornsife Physics/CS, and am reconsidering for Viterbi CS. I'm mainly concerned that Physics/CS won't appeal to big tech companies, and that pursuing two things would "water down" my degree and focus on computer science. Thoughts about each major and outcome in the workplace for each major? If you are in one of the majors, how do you feel about it?

PS. (If you happen to know), what different is the experience in Dornsife versus Viterbi? What have alumni in each major gone on to do?

Presidential Scholarship and National Merit Finalist

$

On USC website, they mentioned the following:
Presidential Scholarship
Half-tuition scholarship awarded based on academic excellence, leadership, service and talent. (~200 awards). Students may also be selected for the Presidential Scholarship through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation on the basis of their PSAT performance. Entering first-year students are considered if they have been designated National Merit Finalists and name USC as their first-choice college.

Does it mean if a student is NMF and is accepted to USC, he/she is treated as presidential scholar? I know that NMF accepted student will get the half-tuition, but what about other benefits, like McCarthy Honors College?

USC notifies applicants of their Merit Scholarship status by February 1. If NMSF student applies for merit scholarship and doesn't get this notification, does it mean that his/her application might be rejected?

For USC this year, are the major scholarships (full and half tuition) only for US citizens?

For past years, I've seen that these scholarships select from an "international pool", however on this doc this year, it says "Candidates are selected by USC faculty and staff from an extremely competitive NATIONAL pool. Applicants pursue the most demanding curriculum and achieve at the highest level." and "Average SAT and ACT scores are in the top 1 to 2 percent of all students NATIONWIDE. In addition to academic criteria, candidates’ talent, perseverance, innovation, involvement and leadership are considered." Here is the PDF for reference: https://admission.usc.edu/wp-content/uploads/USC-Scholarships.pdf

Just wanted to confirm I was reading this right.

National Merit $2500 Award and 1/2 Tuition at University of Southern California

My d is a National Merit Finalist and has also been awarded the National Merit $2500 Scholarship. She needs to accept or decline this scholarship money by Apr 6 2020. If she accepts this money from NMSC, will she still be awarded the 1/2 tuition by University of Southern California? Please help. I am not able to talk to anyone at NMSC because of Covid19 and no one at USC Financial Aid office can give me a definitive answer.
